Hot on the heels of #OccupyGezi in Istanbul, Brazil bursts onto the global revolutionary scene with its own signature heat. Between 200,000 to 400,000 people have flooded the streets in San Paolo, Rio de Janeiro, and in other major cities across the country, protesting whilst waving Brazilian flags, dancing and jubilantly singing slogans such as “The People have awakened” and “Pardon the inconvenience, Brazil is changing.”

This massive uproar was triggered by a 20 cent increase for bus fare in San Paolo last week. This seemingly small detail was the straw that broke the camels back, breaking open the status-quo of Brazil and causing the whole situation across the country explode. In Istanbul, the final straw was a few trees in Gezi park that were about to be bulldozed over for a Western-style development project. And now the rest of our world seems poised – with every country near and far harboring its own Achilles hill; its own tender, exposed nerve of geopolitical vulnerability …

Counting it all since the Greek austerity riots, the Spanish Indignados, Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street, there are now over fifteen countries with pissed off, unemployed youth ready to rumble. What will be the final straw for Australia, The UK, Canada? For India … China?

It’s not a question of the possibility of Global String, but how long it will take for the inevitable to happen.

It was only two years ago that the country’s Climate Commission released its first major report, The Critical Decade. And although we are only a quarter of the way through the decade, the Commission says that its original forecasts are now a reality and the scientific consensus is even stronger. The need for action is even greater.

That means that we cannot carry on investing in fossil fuels, regardless of whether it is Australian coal, Canadian tar sands or American shale gas. “We have to leave most of the fossil fuels in the ground and of course that has obvious implications for investment decisions this decade,” concluded Professor Steffen.

New documents show that TransCanada, the corporation behind the $5.3 billion Keystone XL oil pipeline, has been briefing police about non-violent protesters and urging prosecutors to consider them “terrorists.”

“They may climb and occupy trees “

What have protesters done that is so troubling to TransCanada that they need to beg law enforcement for assistance?

“They may climb and occupy trees,” TransCanada warns.

In Oklahoma, ”a protester walked in to the lane of a slow moving vehicle.” There has been “no physical violence to this point.”

In Texas, there has been “demonstrations / protest activity,” “tree houses,” “banners,” “social media organization,” and again — no physical violence.

In Nebraska, where this briefing took place, there has been “protest/demonstrations” and “opposition attendance” at public meetings. At the very worst, landowners have allegedly been heard saying they “longed for the days when you could shoot people on your land.” However, there has not been any property destruction in the state, let alone violence.

“Try as TransCanada might to slanderize Tar Sands Blockade and our growing grassroots movement, we know who the real criminals are,” said Ron Seifert, a spokesperson with Tar Sands Blockade who was pictured in the slideshow. “The real criminals are those profiting from this deadly pipeline by endangering families living along the route and pumping illegal levels of air toxins into fence-line communities.”

The Real Threat

One of the final slides of the presentation is particularly revealing in terms of what is at stake here. The list of “Potential Security Concerns” includes

Gulf Coast Project — recent media attention.

Keystone XL — media, high profile.

Environmental Activism.

Energy Action Coalition — “Fossil Fools Day”

Protest, Blockade, Threats, Office occupation

Future open houses, public meetings

Landowner court challenges

Notice the emphasis on media and public exposure? TransCanada is not pleading with law enforcement to crack down on property destruction or violence, because that’s not what this campaign is about. The campaign against the Keystone XL pipeline has resulted in widespread public support, and positive media coverage about people willing to non-violently put their bodies on the line.

That’s why TransCanada has also hired a new PR agent: the corporation says “we have been dwarfed by the content the activists have and are posting online with respect to Keystone XL.” And they say they may hire PR giant SKDKnickerbocker.

Something tells me the first recommendation from a new public relations firm will be “don’t create any more presentations like this.”

The next stage of our war for economic independence is being determined in trade talks that are being conducted in deep secrecy by a president who once promised “the most transparent administration in history.”

Laurel Sutherlin calls the Trans-Pacific Partnership #TPP ”a worldwide corporate power grab of enormous proportions,” and that pretty accurately sums it up. (It’s hard to write about these deals without sounding hyperbolic, even if you’re only being descriptive.) As Sutherlin points out, the TPP “is among the largest and potentially most important ‘free trade’ agreements the world has ever seen …”

Although 600 corporate representatives have seen drafts of the agreement, access has been denied to even high-ranking members of Congress. Dave Johnson excerpts some provisions being considered in the secret talks, and they’re truly terrifying.

In fact, as Lori Wallach and Ben Beachy point out in a must-read editorial [http://nyti.ms/18KPNgW] , the treaty’s provisions are so unpopular that the last negotiator felt it could only be concluded in secret. And now sovereignty-killing provisions are being considered for a trade agreement with member nations of the European Union.

But President Obama, like presidents Bush and Clinton before him, appears to be on the wrong side of this fight. He needs to hear from voters who insist on transparent talks and a return to full American sovereignty.

HR1256, the “Swaps Jurisdiction Certainty Act,” which allows banks to hold derivatives overseas and dodge US regulations, really ought to be called the “Dodging US Rules By Sneaking Derivatives Overseas Act” or even the “AIG Bailout Certainty Act,” as Public Citizen noted.

But why is this bill being brought to the House Floor so fast? And who’s really behind it?

Eric Lipton at the NYTimes wrote an excellent article that explains where this came from called “Banks Rally Against Strict Controls of Foreign Bets.” In it, Lipton reveals that (1) The banks are extremely critical of the CFTC’s new rules on derivatives, and (2) That Scott Garrett is being paid more than half a million by banks to effectively TROLL GARY GENSLER and the CFTC:

Representative Scott Garrett, Republican of New Jersey, who serves as chairman of the House subcommittee that oversees capital markets, has emerged as a leading critic of Mr. Gensler’s plan, sponsoring legislation that would curb his powers.

Mr. Garrett has collected more than $535,000 in contributions from investment banks and securities companies in the last election cycle, behind only Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, in the House.

Banks made a simple request, Mr. Garrett said: “Put as much pressure as possible on the C.F.T.C.”

It seems his partisan shilling also affects Democrats, many of whomvoted for HR1256 in the House Financial Services Committee. And it even seems it may be influencing the President, who has been busythrowing Gary Gensler out of the CFTC and under the bus. We should all be so lucky as to have Rep Scott Garrett #SHILLSOHARD for us.

It’s an appropriate moment — among many appropriate moments in recent weeks — to ask what is really going on here in the way of government surveillance and what is becoming habitual unconstitutional overreach.

As most Americans continue to struggle through the rough economic times that were foisted on us by the financial elite, our government and politicians have once again taken it upon themselves to protect us even further from something the 99 percent don’t even think about on a daily basis: terrorism.
